- ➤ On Wednesday, Lerner & Rowe presented a $5,000 check to the Yuma Community Food Bank to help fund emergency food programs and gave away 1,000 backpacks with school supplies and snacks to ease back-to-school costs—an act meant to thank the community for its support; the law firm said it plans more giveback events in the future. - ➤ Yuma resident Jonny Porter launched his daily radio show 'What’s Up Yuma,' which grew from his popular social media series that shared local voices and stories; the program airs Monday through Friday (10 a.m.) on KOFA 94.7 FM and will feature interviews and community topics like rattlesnake safety. - ➤ At about 10:12 a.m. Friday, Wellton Fire Department responded to a fire on County 11th Street that destroyed a single-family home and spread to nearby trailers—no injuries were reported. KYMA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Yuma Union High School District high schools are holding meet-and-greet sessions with teachers on Monday evening to help students prepare for the first day of classes on Tuesday, July 29th. The event is designed to ease nervousness for incoming freshmen and offer seniors guidance on teacher expectations+ setting a positive start for the school year. KYMA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City of Yuma will begin road projects—such as street crack sealing, street grinding, asphalt patching and sidewalk repair—in the next few months, and reporter Madeline Murray will share more details later this afternoon. KYMA
- ➤ Lawmakers passed the Aviation Cancer Examination Study Act, which directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to work with the National Academies to study cancer risks among military aircrews and will now head to the president’s desk. Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly said the act follows a 2023 report showing pilots had a 24% higher risk of cancer—concerns that resonate with service members like Yuma native Paul Madriles. AZ Family
- ➤ Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes joined a bipartisan coalition asking Congress to pass the Safer Banking Act so that cannabis businesses can use banks and credit unions.
