COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nathan Ivy rescued a blind dog near Lake Mittry after hearing its cries while fishing over the weekend. He is now caring for Stevie + asking for adoption and financial help for his medical expenses.  KYMA
  • Rural Metro Fire is hosting a giveaway for a ride on its fire truck during the Foothills Parade of Light, which runs Dec. 19-21. Locals who like and follow the Rural Metro Fire Facebook page can enter; winners will be announced on Dec. 15 (party of two required).  KYMA
  • Nova Home Loans (a longtime supporter) is sponsoring 20 foster kids this Christmas season as part of the Giving Tree Program by the Arizona Department of Child Safety. The program lets foster youth share their gift wishes and invites the community to help meet their needs.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vista High School hosted its Winter Wonderland open house today to help families learn about its curriculum and programs. Teachers and students answered questions while Santa Claus and the Grinch appeared (one of several Why Vista events offered each semester).  KYMA
  • AmeriSchools Academy is launching a new charter middle school at the Yuma South campus for the 2026–27 school year. The school will begin with sixth and seventh graders, limit classes to 25, and introduce the city’s first middle school e-sports program (designed to build teamwork and digital skills).  KYMA
  • Crane Schools superintendent Laurie Doering announced that she plans to retire at the end of the academic year after beginning her teaching career in 1983, serving as assistant superintendent in 2014 and as superintendent since 2017.  KYMA
  • Arizona Western College hosted the Board of Regents at its Yuma campus on Dec. 4 to review a Regents’ Research Grant proposal aimed at boosting local agriculture and workforce ties. AWC leaders and state elected officials discussed progress and educational partnerships (including input from House and Senate members).  Arizona Western College
  • Twenty-two fourth-semester nursing students at Arizona Western College were inducted into the OADN Honor Society on Dec. 3 — an honor recognizing their academic excellence and community service. Their projects supported local hunger relief with toy drives and food bank donations.  Arizona Western College

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The White House announced a $12B farmer assistance program that covers several states but not Yuma, leaving local growers surprised. Local farmers hope officials will review the program to include our region + boost support for our vital agriculture.  KYMA

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Yuma shoppers are preparing for holiday spending by planning early purchases both in stores and online to manage rising prices at budget-friendly spots such as Five Below. They plan to split buying smaller items in person and larger gifts online.  KYMA
