COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The K-9 OPS Foundation has organized a Hams for Heroes drive scheduled for Monday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Foothills Walmart — hams will be donated to local firefighters, police, veterans and other heroes.  KYMA
  • Rafi Law Group donated $12,500 to the Yuma Community Food Bank on Thursday to help provide meals for those in need — the donation launched a food drive at Walmart in San Luis that will run through Dec. 15. Community members can support the drive to ease holiday strain.  KYMA

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Farm Film Festival will take place this Thursday, Dec. 11 at the Historic Yuma Downtown Theater, showcasing Yuma's agricultural impact and technology while noting the city supplies over 90% of America’s leafy greens during winter.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thursday morning, the Arizona Board of Regents announced a $3,000,000 grant to local branches of ASU, UA, and NAU to boost ag research and sustainable farming practices in the Yuma area. The funds will be distributed as $1,000,000 per year for three years.  KYMA
  • On Thursday, Dec. 4, State Superintendent Tom Horne visited Gowan Science Academy in Yuma to recognize the school’s academic success and tour classrooms, presenting an Exemplary Academic Achievement Award plaque (with math and Language Arts scores significantly above state averages).  KYMA
  • Onvida Health & the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix will launch a three-year MD program in Yuma next July that admits up to 15 students per year with full-tuition scholarships to address a local doctor shortage. Graduates can enter residency and serve underserved communities.  KYMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The One Big Beautiful Bill Act changed SNAP work requirements by raising the age limit from 54 to 64 — a change that local residents say may be hard to meet. USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins also threatened to cut funds if states do not share data.  KYMA
