COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Somerton hosted its annual lighting of Centennial Park with free festive activities including a gingerbread house contest, games, raffles, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. The event began today at 5 p.m. with the tree lit at 6 p.m. — bringing the community together.  KYMA
  • Housing America Corporation is holding a holiday toy drive for over 160 children in low-income complexes in Somerton and Yuma. The organization is accepting unwrapped toys and cash donations until Dec. 12 — gifts will be distributed next week.  KYMA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historic Yuma Downtown Theater (venue for the festival) will host the Farm Film Festival on Thursday, Dec. 11 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event celebrates Yuma's tech-driven agriculture (with over 90% of America's leafy greens produced locally).  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona Western College hosted the annual consortium summit for Hispanic Serving Institutions on Oct. 24. Over 160 leaders from 15 HSIs met to share evidence-based strategies for student success and innovation in higher education.  Arizona Western College
  • Quick Refrigeration will present a check to the Arizona Western College Foundation on Friday, Dec. 5 at 7:00 p.m. at Quechan Casino Resort during its Christmas and 70th Anniversary Celebration; the contribution will establish the Ricardo (Ric) Daniel Memorial HVAC Scholarship to support AWC HVAC programs.  Arizona Western College
  • Arizona's State Board of Education will meet Monday, Dec. 8 to consider revising teaching standards after state leaders requested removal of DEI language. Superintendent Tom Horne warned the change may prevent schools from risking federal funding (cultural responsiveness, inclusive lessons and equity-focused teaching are targeted).  KYMA

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the inside Yuma Fight Academy, 19-year-old Romeo Ponce is making a name for himself with two first-round knockout wins at 130-pound and mentors young boxers in the community. He began boxing at 14 and is gaining local support.  KYMA
