COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Healing Journey, a local nonprofit, will host its Third Annual Light the Night for Hope Walk to raise awareness for domestic violence. The event will be held Monday, October 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.—beginning at Del Sol at Fourth Avenue and 16th Street.  KYMA
  • Quechan and Paradise Casinos donated eight pallets of items to Amberly's Place to support victims of violence and domestic abuse. Steve Neely, the casinos' chief marketing officer, said the donation helps the non-profit continue its work—boosting community support.  KYMA
  • Yuma Police Department, Yuma County Fair Inc. and the City of Yuma will host the Scary & Safe Trick or Treat event on Halloween night from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Yuma County Fairgrounds — the event will feature a DJ, face painting, vehicle displays, a big screen movie, and hot dogs for purchase, with all proceeds benefiting the Arizona Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Harvest Preparatory Academy's STEM program now uses lab equipment from the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension to run DNA extraction tests for a mobile app project to track cactus rot (helping students avoid trips to Tucson for experiments).  KYMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fat Daddy's Burgers and Grill in Yuma received approval from the Board of Adjustment to operate with a five-foot buffer—despite a county rule requiring 20 feet that would have reduced parking and space. Local customers and staff supported the decision, and the restaurant will continue serving burgers and hosting music.  KYMA
