COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tuesday's Home Grown report highlighted Martha Ryan, a local agriculture worker and the Farm Spray and Planting Department Manager at JV Farms (she has farmed since age 18) who has been on the planting team for nearly three years. Ryan said her work represents Latina women in agriculture and follows her father's legacy in farming.  KYMA
  • Instagram announced Tuesday that teen users would see content similar to a PG-13 movie (filtering out mature language, risky stunts and adult posts) and local residents in Yuma reacted as reporter Joaquin Hight covered community responses later that evening.  KYMA
  • Yuma Farmers Market will host the Homemade County Christmas Dinner and Dance at the Elks Lodge on December 13th. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.—dinner starts at 6:00 p.m.—music begins at 7:00 p.m. as tickets cost $65 and include photography, prizes and pictures.  KYMA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local makeup artist Olivia Esperanza was featured in Vogue magazine after her work was shown at Santa Fe Indian Market Fashion Week (she began her career when local compliments sparked her interest) and she expressed excitement about her progress. She advised Yuma artists to keep trying (believing that hard work brings big opportunities) as she hopes to attend Fashion Week events in New York or Milan in the future.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • From October 20-24, Arizona Western College will host National Transfer Student Week events in Yuma that offer workshops on transfer options, financial literacy, and career preparation. The events feature the Yuma Transfer and Career Expo on October 20 (with participation from eleven state universities and over twenty local employers) that will help students plan their future careers.  Arizona Western College
