- ➤ Foothills Animal Rescue from Scottsdale drove 400 miles to Yuma to save 14 pets—12 dogs and two cats—from an abandonment case after viral TikTok videos overwhelmed the Humane Society of Yuma. The animals are now receiving vet care, food and behavioral support until cleared for adoption. AZ Family
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The vice mayor Tadeo De La Hoya, 42, was in court Thursday morning to face a felony charge for unlawful flight from law enforcement after he failed to stop for San Luis police on September 28—he will return on October 27 and continue in office as confirmed by Mayor Riedel. KYMA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Arizona Western College Continuing Education in partnership with the Arizona Community Tree Council is now accepting applications for an 8-week full scholarship arboriculture training program that runs from October 20—December 18 and gives hands-on training in tree care, tree identification, and first aid for young adults in Yuma. Applicants aged 18 to 26 who have a high school diploma or GED will earn $15 per hour, get safety equipment and travel assistance, and receive a $1,000 completion stipend with the possibility of paid internships. - ➤ Locals in Yuma are preparing for rain this week from Tropical Storm Priscilla’s remnants — many filling sandbag bins at the Civic Center to protect property — as they recover from recent water damage. KYMA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office launched Versaterm Community Connect — a new system that sends text or email updates 15 minutes after residents request help if a deputy is delayed — after testing it since July. The system also offers incident numbers for follow-ups and is available in both English and Spanish. KYMA
