COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ After a devastating fire in March, the Foothills American Veterans Service Organization spent seven months rebuilding and will reopen on Monday to help veterans access benefits and get three low-cost meals a day—manager June Condon said the final steps make the renewed center worth the effort. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Arizona Community Foundation awarded Gowan Science Academy with the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award — presenting a plaque and a $500 check. The academy has organized food drives and raised funds for local charities and will continue these efforts. KYMA
- ➤ Arizona Western College CEO Dr. Reetika Dhawan went to SEMICON Taiwan 2025 on October 2nd with Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls and District 2 Supervisor Jonathan Lines to learn from top semiconductor leaders. She described a 12-week bootcamp and micro-credential programs that help students prepare for new tech jobs—efforts that will boost Arizona’s workforce. Arizona Western College
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ An area of low-pressure is bringing cooler temperatures and strong west winds to Yuma today with gusts up to 40 MPH— a Wind Advisory covers parts of the southwest corner of Imperial County from 3 p.m. until midnight Saturday morning. Temperatures are expected to ease into the low 90s this weekend as the breezy conditions continue. KYMA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The mayor of San Luis toured the Port of Entry and said the project is five months ahead of schedule and will finish by fall next year. In November only one lane will be open for travelers heading south—officials added the port will expand from eight to 18 lanes. KYMA
- ➤ The Yuma City Council adopted two ordinances Wednesday night that authorized $116 million in revenue bonds for the city’s Capital Improvement Plan for fiscal years 2026 through 2030. Of the total, $44 million will fund water and wastewater improvements and $72 million will support infrastructure and community projects including park upgrades — city officials said the bonds will allow projects to start sooner while spreading costs over time.
