ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Lightcast study shows that in the 2023-24 fiscal year Arizona Western College added almost $319.2 million to the incomes of La Paz and Yuma County. The study finds that one in every 23 jobs is linked to the college — graduates with an associate degree earn over $7000 more annually than high school graduates.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yuma High will induct its Athletic class of 2025 into its Hall of Fame with five individuals, one team and four representatives joining 142 inductees. Future events are set for October 17—featuring a meet and greet at Lute’s Casino and a game kickoff—and October 18—with a cafeteria ceremony and plaque presentation.  KYMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yuma County is tightening its financial oversight after a fraud case in Santa Cruz County where over 38-million dollars was stolen by adding a law that lets state auditors check all county bank records. County officials said the new measures helped catch an email fraud attempt—prompting better staff training and review practices.  KYMA
  • Yuma County is planning a new solid waste transfer station on County 19th Street on a 10-acre parcel provided by the Bureau of Reclamation + the facility will feature 30 large bins, offer free trash disposal for residents, and is expected to open in late spring or early summer to cut down on illegal dumping.  KYMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • A recent study by Invigor Medical showed that obesity rates among Arizona adults aged 55–64 increased by more than 9% from 2013 to 2023—while Onvida reported that 30 to 32 percent of people in Yuma County now face obesity issues. Onvida linked the rise to heat, limited mobility, and diet, and urged residents to get 30–45 minutes of exercise daily to reduce risks for heart disease and diabetes.  KYMA

  • Arizona Western College welcomes Scott Gross as its new Sports Information Director as he leads sports play-by-play and media promotions for Matador Athletics while also serving as Assistant Athletic Director. Gross brings nearly 30 years of broadcast experience (including his work at KYMA-TV) to the role.  Arizona Western College
  • Arizona Western College has named Scott Gross as its new sports information director to promote Matador Athletics by calling home game plays, reporting team numbers, updating rosters and managing sponsors. He joins AWC with nearly 30 years of experience from KYMA—he has earned awards including a Rocky Mountain Southwest Emmy.  KYMA
