ECONOMY NEWS

  • Arizona's minimum wage will rise from $14.70 to $15.15 on Jan. 1 as state law adjusts it for inflation—this marks the first time it exceeds $15, though some local workers say it may not cover living costs.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona Western College received a $250,000 Perkins Innovation and Modernization grant on September 16 to expand its CTE programs for work-based learning — the funds will help rural and first-generation students gain hands-on skills and credentials and connect with local employers — as the college builds a skilled workforce.  Arizona Western College
  • The Yuma Community Job — Education Fair will be held on October 8 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Arizona Western College’s Schoening Center to help locals find jobs, with priority admission offered to veterans, active military — spouses and free transportation provided by YCAT.  KYMA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, remnants of Tropical Storm Mario will bring humid conditions and showers after 11 a.m. to the Desert Southwest with rain continuing on and off through Friday—thunderstorms may bring quicker heavier bursts.  KYMA
  • A new study by Ali T. Mohammed at the University of Arizona shows that lowering irrigation nitrogen can cut aphid infestations on lettuce—tiny bugs that suck plant sap hurt the crop and Arizona’s two-billion-dollar industry— and growers may use the method to better protect their fields.  KYMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Yuma Communication Team won national awards at the 3CMA Awards Ceremony in Las Vegas for a Spanish-language outreach video Charlemos Yuma and a digital news segment City News Yuma Minute—judges noted the video was entertaining and inclusive while praising the news segment as a smart strategy with great outcomes. Communications Manager Jen Miller said the awards demonstrate the team's creative and community-first approach to reaching residents.  KYMA
