- ➤ 85-year-old Betsy Vincent donated over 1,000 original paintings to Saint Vincent de Paul's De Paul Manor Shelter so each resident moving into permanent housing receives a piece of art—43 residents have already received paintings as the shelter served 159 people since opening. KYMA
- ➤ Families and visitors enjoyed Lake Martinez for Labor Day weekend as they took in the sun and water, but low levels kept boats on the Southside of the river—officials said multiple agencies worked together to ensure safety. KYMA
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A motorcyclist died in a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Avenue 7E and Highway 95 Tuesday morning—there were no other injuries and the road has since reopened. KYMA
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ 31-year-old Brittney Garcia, convicted for murdering 29-year-old Erik Cruz in June, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years for second-degree murder and theft of means of transportation—she also received 15 more years for narcotic drug possession, with all sentences running consecutively. KYMA
- ➤ On Monday, an off-duty YPD officer was arrested in a parking lot near W. 24th Street and Avenue C for domestic violence—he was placed on administrative leave and booked for disorderly conduct and harassment. KYMA
- ➤ 51-year-old Mubarak Prince, accused of shooting at a YCSO helicopter, accepted a plea deal that changes his not guilty plea on seven counts—including aggravated assault, endangerment, and disorderly conduct—to a sentence to be determined at his change of plea hearing on September 30 while his bond is reduced from $1 million to $150,000. - ➤ Last week a storm hit Yuma County and damaged many areas, but most agriculture fields were spared since few crops had started growing. Mike Pasquinelli from the Yuma Fresh Vegetable Association said minor damage affected cotton and Sudan grass seed—steering plans to improve flood controls. KYMA

- ➤ YFD Fire Chief Dustin Fields, who served for over 30 years, is retiring this Friday, September 5—leaving behind a record of service and innovation. A public reception honoring him is held at Yuma City Hall today after the City Council meeting. KYMA
- ➤ The T.K. Jones Campground in Imperial County will be closed from September 21 to October 9 for paving upgrades — including asphalt paving, pavement sealing, striping and painting — to ensure public safety. BLM said the campground may reopen before October 9 if the work is completed sooner. KYMA
- ➤ California lawmakers are pushing a bill that will require chatbots to flag suicidal thoughts and connect users with real help—this follows a case where a California teen’s death was linked to an AI chatbot.
