COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local restaurant, Raising Cane’s, will host a fundraiser on Tuesday, August 26 where one dollar from each box combo sold will support Kidd’s Kids so children with life-altering conditions can visit Disney World – the campaign aims to raise $75,000 and is held at the location on 16th Street across from Yuma Palms Mall.  KYMA

CRIME NEWS

  • The San Luis Police Department is searching for 71-year-old Carlos Sanchez after he was last seen leaving his home in his green 2001 Ford Excursion as he suffers from dementia and anyone with information is urged to call (928) 341-2420.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yuma School District One said its special needs students outperformed the state average on the 2025 Multi-State Alternative Assessment (MSAA) for English, math, and science, with each grade meeting or exceeding average scale scores and a higher percentage scoring proficient or highly proficient.  KYMA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yuma farmers are adapting to water restrictions on the Colorado River as a drought forces Arizona to cut 18% of its water supply until 2026. Tom Davis of the Yuma County Water Users’ Association said farmers are planting fewer summer crops and using more efficient irrigation methods—actions aimed at lowering water costs.  AZ Family
  • Today, the National Weather Service issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Yuma and Imperial Counties as temperatures are set to reach 112 to 116 degrees with overnight lows near 90. Residents are urged to remain hydrated and check on vulnerable neighbors—thunderstorms may bring gusty winds and isolated downpours by the weekend—while slight improvements are expected early next week.  KYMA
  • Two raptors are getting a second chance at Vida Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Yuma after being flown from Lake Havasu by Major Scott Myers of the Civil Air Patrol—one bird has a broken wing and the other has underdeveloped flight muscles. With community support, the birds now have a safe place to heal and are expected to fully recover and eventually return to the wild.  KYMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Board of Supervisors meeting, Yuma County approved for consideration the renewal of CrowdStrike Falcon software — which has protected county systems from cyberattacks since 2021 — at a cost of $160,108.73 with coverage planned through August 6, 2026.  KYMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Onvida Health launched a new Psychiatry Residency Program in Yuma to train four new doctors in child and adolescent psychiatry, addiction medicine and psychotherapy—adding to its existing family and sports medicine residencies.  KYMA
  • Onvida Health's online rating jumped from 2.4 to 4 stars on google and the hospital credited its staff and the Yuma community for this milestone—CEO Dr. Robert Trenschel said feedback from patients guides the changes made.  KYMA
