COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Travis Manion Foundation of Yuma will host the 9/11 Heroes Run on September 13 at the PAAC east parking lot starting at 5 a.m.—collaborating with MCAS Yuma, YPG and other local groups, the event will invite community members to honor those impacted by 9/11.  KYMA

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Yuma Fire Department answered a call at about 4:30 p.m. on Monday for a fire on West 19th Street and South Third Avenue—where firefighters found a mobile home fully engulfed in flames and a second home affected—and no injuries were reported.  KYMA

CRIME NEWS

  • 67-year-old Rogelio Sanchez accepted a plea deal after crashing his Ford F-150 into a Border Patrol checkpoint in October 2023, injuring two agents and having all other charges dropped—his sentencing hearing is set for September.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona Western Entrepreneurial College will begin a fully-Spanish Electrician certification program this fall at the Wellton Manufacturing Training Center, where students will learn basic electrical wiring skills and earn an occupational certificate in two semesters (Fundamentos de Electricidad). Classes will run Monday and Wednesday night from August 12 to December 6.  Arizona Western College
  • Lerner & Rowe is giving away 1,000 backpacks at the Yuma fairgrounds today at 4 p.m. to help local students prepare for school, with supplies distributed on a first-come first-serve basis.  KYMA
  • Students across Yuma and Imperial counties will begin school on staggered dates starting Monday, July 28 with several Yuma districts opening between July 28 and August 11 while Imperial County schools will resume from August 11 through August 19 (each district has set its own schedule).  KYMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • KAWC on the Arizona Western College campus faces a 20% budget cut that removes $200k from its funding and has led to layoffs of part time staff—yet the station will keep broadcasting while working with partner networks for discounts. Students on campus have voiced concerns about job losses as KAWC hopes Congress will propose more funding soon.  KYMA
  • On Tuesday, Bard Water District was featured on Homegrown as part of the Yuma Project and explained how its system delivers water to Winterhaven farmers - general manager Nick Bahr detailed the water-order process. The district is now working on an automation system that will adjust water delivery without human input.  KYMA
  • Air Force Special Operations Command began hosting Emerald Warrior 25.2 on July 21 at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and at other training locations across Arizona and California; the exercise will continue until August 11 and features advanced scenarios designed to boost special operations skills—residents near the sites may notice increased military activity.  KYMA
