- ➤ Extreme heat is making it hard for many locals to stay cool in Yuma but Crossroads Mission offers a 24-hour cooling station where people can rest and get water—guests have increased by 15—20 daily and the non-profit needs more water donations to continue its relief efforts. KYMA
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ 35-year-old Donavan Jamal Thomas was extradited from New York on May 16 and appeared in Yuma court where he was booked at the County Detention Center on charges of first degree murder, kidnapping and leaving the scene of an accident with death or injury in connection with a hit-and-run that killed 34-year-old Ijah Se'lah Smith — his attorney said more time is needed to review evidence while he is set for a final management conference on August 21 and his bond remains at $1 million. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Arizona Western College hosted the Future Matadors Career Exploration Camp last month for high school students in Yuma and Parker who are first-generation or underrepresented, pairing 30 students with nine college mentors. The five-day camp taught skills in college admissions, financial aid and career exploration and built local partnerships through a project funded by the AWC Innovation Fund (TRIO Talent Search). - ➤ Governor Katie Hobbs signed a law that makes it a crime to neglect pet medical care—pet owners now risk a class 5 felony, a class 6 felony, or a class 1 misdemeanor. KYMA
- ➤ Yuma County Recorder’s Office will get $1 million from Arizona to improve its voting operations—Recorder David Lara said the money will help pay for better equipment, training, and certification over several years. County Administrator Ian Mcgaughey credited local lawmakers for securing the funds. KYMA

- ➤ Yuma County announced that some local mosquitos are carrying the Saint Louis Encephalitis Virus which can cause fever, aches, and even brain infection. County officials will fog one square mile of any positive area and urge residents to use repellent and wear long sleeves — measures designed to reduce the spread of the virus. KYMA
