ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On June 18, at about 3 p.m., Yuma Police said a 37-year-old motorcyclist, who was speeding, was taken to Onvida Health with serious injuries after being hit by a 59-year-old impaired Mazda driver turning left near W. 32nd Street and S. 8th Avenue+ the investigation is ongoing.  KYMA

CRIME NEWS

  • A day after U.S. and Mexican authorities launched the Se Busca Información campaign in Yuma, border patrol received a tip that led to the arrest of Mariana Fernandez — a suspect with prior charges for narcotic smuggling and a probation violation who was taken at the San Luis port of entry.  KYMA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • APS is asking regulators for permission to raise electricity rates by nearly 14% which would add about $20 to the monthly bill for customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours, and public hearings will be held by the Arizona Corporation Commission before the increase can take effect in the second half of 2026. Local residents and state officials have pushed back on the plan as APS says the rate hike is needed to fund grid upgrades + weather resilience improvements.  KYMA
  • A HomeGrown report on Tuesday highlighted Sudan grass, a popular summer crop grown in tall fields that now replace lettuce in Yuma, used for hay to feed livestock+ and for planting seed production for export markets. The report explained that planting occurs from mid-March to August and that proper density is key for the desired texture.  KYMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Yuma and Yuma Metropolitan Planning Organization are seeking public input on transportation plans to improve road safety, traffic flow, and transit, biking, and walking options using roadway and intersection upgrades + additional network enhancements. Residents must submit their feedback by July 12 to help shape the final plan.  KYMA
