Good morning, Yuma. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 14th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • A Yuma man, 34-year-old Abraham Espinoza, was sentenced Friday to three and half years in prison for shooting a group of people outside Platinum Cabaret in March—he pled guilty to one count of aggravated assault and will receive credit for over 400 days served.  KYMA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mainstream Aquaculture runs a desert fish farm in Yuma County where it raises barramundi using groundwater that some experts say is a nonrenewable resource. The company has improved pond design to cut water use by half — local water experts still worry that the practice may deplete the aquifer — and it plans to work with local farmers to reuse the nutrient-rich water on crops.  AZ Family

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • José Malvido is running for the open congressional seat left after congressman Raul Grijalva’s passing and has worked for nonprofit groups and medical organizations. He will campaign on plans like medicare for all, no college tuition, and raising the minimum wage (and will work directly with Yuma communities) as the Arizona Special Primary Election takes place on July 15.  KYMA
