COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yuma will host a Juneteenth celebration at Carver Park (385 S. 13th Ave.) on June 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Raffles, activities and food vendors will mark the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 16th, a mother and her two children earned associate degrees at Arizona Western College in Yuma. Maria Molina, an AWC employee, will pursue an Occupational Certificate in Logistics while her daughter Brianda and son Luis plan to continue their education later this fall (Luis plans to attend Embry-Riddle for aerospace engineering and Brianda intends to pursue a Welding degree with the Air Force).  Arizona Western College

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Yuma will host an open house to present the updated Joint Land Use Plan, created in collaboration with Somerton and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. The event will be held on June 2 at 6 p.m.—room 190 at City Hall—so residents can review the plan and share their input.  KYMA
  • Yuma officials are weighing in on a federal budget proposal that may cut Medicaid and free school meals, with former Health Secretary Xavier Becerra and Representative Nancy Gutierrez saying the changes could hurt working families. Yuma County Recorder David Lara defended the plan—claiming it targets waste and improves funding efficiency.  KYMA
  • A historic hotel in Downtown Yuma is being sold for redevelopment to boost property tax revenue and refresh social life—Mayor Doug Nicholls said the building may be converted into apartments to help with local affordable housing needs. Future planning details are still in the early stages.  KYMA
  • The Yuma City Council is set to review the proposed fiscal year 2026 budget, which totals almost $547,121,059 and covers all city departments such as government, parks and recreation, and police. Deputy Mayor Carol Smith—referring to the city's operating costs including the CIP—said residents will receive an update tonight at 10 p.m.  KYMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • As summer begins, Yuma Fire Department warns families to be safe around water because drowning is the top cause of death for young children, with 29 deaths among ages 0 to 4 reported in 2021 (state data confirms the risk). The city and the Greater Yuma Water Safety Alliance will offer a free one-hour class (teaching CPR and providing a life jacket for each child) to help prevent future tragedies.  KYMA
