CRIME NEWS

  • On May 14, a 33-year-old man was arrested on Arizona Avenue for a shooting that injured a 32-year-old man at about 1:50 a.m. on May 9—he was booked on a bond over $1 million and will appear in court today facing four felonies including attempted first degree murder, while the investigation continues.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yuma Elementary School District One held its May governing board meeting on Tuesday where board members recognized local excellence by presenting Gila Vista Jr. High School a banner for being named a purple star school by the Arizona Department of Education and honoring Superintendent James Sheldahl for his Global Achievement Award nomination. The board also discussed a proposal to adjust school boundaries due to recent growth in the Desert Mesa and Castle Dome Middle School areas — they will continue these discussions at the next May special meeting and provide transportation for affected students.  KYMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senator Ruben Gallego outlined a new border security and immigration reform plan built on a five—pillar system that aims to secure the border and create legal pathways for immigrants. Arizona State Senator Tim Dunn critiqued the plan—saying similar ideas have been tried before.  KYMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Onvida Health in Yuma warns that proposed Medicaid cuts may force the hospital to limit vital services such as the NICU and behavioral health care, leaving patients to travel elsewhere in emergencies. Hospital CEO Robert Trenschel said these potential cuts could require hard choices on service reductions given the facility’s thin margins from its 85% government-insured patient mix and that he met with congressional leaders to raise the alarm.  AZ Family
