  • OneAZ Credit Union awarded $7,500 to United Way of Yuma County, Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, and Yuma Community Food Bank, with the bank set to use the funds to buy about 1,600 gallons of milk to boost food security locally. The grants support housing stability, food security, and economic opportunity.  KYMA
  • The nearly century-old Hotel Del Sol in downtown is set to become a modern transit hub that will connect trains, buses, rideshare, and local transit - preserving its vintage charm while incorporating new commercial space, city leaders said.  AZ Family
  • The Humane Society of Yuma needs community help as kitten season peaks; the shelter cares for 81 kittens while 121 are in foster homes. Volunteers and donors are urged to supply essentials (KMR kitten formula, wet food, baby wipes, and Miracle Nipples) to support the ongoing care.  KYMA
  • Kennedy Skate Park reopened after four months of renovations using community feedback to create a smooth flow for advanced skaters and a safe area at the back for beginners—efforts that aimed to serve all skill levels effectively.  KYMA

  • Camp Titan Fitness owner Peter Romero received the Arizona Veteran Small Business of the Year Award yesterday from the AZ Western College Business Development Center in Yuma; his gym, which started as a backyard boot camp in 2021, now serves a growing community + plans a future youth health initiative.  KYMA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Yuma date farmers are starting to harvest early as intense heat speeds up pollination at Martha’s Garden Date Farm. Nels Rogers said workers trimmed trees on the 160-acre farm where medjool dates thrive + local buyers order online.  AZ Family

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seventeen fourth-semester nursing students were inducted into the Alpha Delta Nu-Iota Theta Chapter at Arizona Western College on May 12 (they were honored for academic excellence and for distributing 250 care packages to the local homeless).  Arizona Western College
  • University of Arizona students researched sustainable farming by testing pest control methods (such as UV lights and lady beetles) to help protect local crops. They showcased their findings at the Celebration of Knowledge event, and the program is funded by a USDA NIFA grant to prepare them for future careers.  KYMA
  • Students from Centennial Middle School and Wellton Elementary raised concerns about law ARS 15-803 C1 — thought to overlook transportation and financial issues — during a recent appearance before the board at Crane School District. Their teacher, Mrs. Baker, said the event encouraged them to use their voices.  KYMA
  • Arizona Western College was chosen for the U.S.A-India Partnership Lab, a year-long initiative by the Association of Community College Trustees. It will develop workforce programs and curriculum in high-demand fields such as manufacturing and logistics by partnering with top Indian institutions — offering student trips.  KYMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Border Patrol Yuma Sector held its annual memorial service to honor fallen officers, gathering local, state & federal law enforcement along with families at a community venue. Officials said the event reinforces support among agencies and ensures the legacy of service is remembered.  KYMA
