  • Gila Ridge Student Council is hosting a 5K walk and run at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. as participants pay a cash-only fee (students $10, others $15) to benefit the Advokate Foundation supporting families affected by childhood cancer.  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kofa High School law and public safety advisor Eric Frost was named SkillsUSA Arizona Advisor of the Year after being nominated by students and his instructional leader Kylie Mackall. He has led his team to three national titles and celebrated the honor with his family.  KYMA
  • Local elementary school students in Yuma recently took on adult roles through United Way’s BizKids program, exploring job roles at sponsoring local businesses. They completed a 16-week curriculum with mock interviews + practical exercises designed to inspire future local careers.  KYMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • YPD and DEA are hosting the biannual National Take Back Initiative on Saturday, Apr. 25 at YPD Headquarters from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event helps residents safely dispose of unwanted medications but will not accept syringes + sharps + liquids + illegal drugs.  KYMA
  • Today, the Yuma County Board of Supervisors joined a new national opioid settlement that adds six pharmaceutical companies and spreads payments over one to 18 years; part of the funds will support treatment, education, and naloxone distribution in Yuma, Somerton, Wellton, and San Luis.  KYMA
