CRIME NEWS

  • Jerry Miranda, 36, appeared in court today facing multiple felony charges — including armed robbery, disorderly conduct with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault — after he allegedly used a knife to steal items from Del Sol Market; he was arrested Sunday night and remains in jail on a $200,000 bond with his next appearance set for April 10.  KYMA
  • A series of dog attacks in Yuma County killed 19 farm animals, including some owned by local 4-H children, and caused a $30,000 loss to dairy goat farmer Caitlynn Mann, who increased her security and purchased a new livestock guardian dog after the sheriff's office intervened (by putting down the dogs) while investigators pursue the responsible owners.  AZ Family

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Bear Down Takeover tour will stop in Yuma to introduce students to University of Arizona staff including head coaches, student-athletes and other representatives at the Gowan Company Courtyard.  KYMA
  • Jennifer Aitken, a custodian at Arizona Western College, was named a Top 10 finalist for the 2025 Custodian of the Year Contest by Cintas Corporation. The contest runs until April 11 and the winning custodian will receive $10,000 while top finalists will win an all-expense-paid trip to the ISSA Show North America in Las Vegas — additional awards benefit their schools.  KYMA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Yuma will host an Arbor Day celebration on Thursday, April 24 at 8:30 a.m. at Joe Henry Memorial Park — local volunteers will plant 40 trees using a grant to improve the city's tree canopy.  KYMA

  • The City of Yuma was named a 2025 Great American Defense Community by the Association of Defense Communities—an honor that recognizes its strong support for military installations and personnel. City officials said the designation reflects lasting partnerships with bases like MCAS Yuma and Yuma Proving Ground that guided local development.  KYMA
  • Yuma County Recorder David Lara announced today the launch of Fraud Notify Alert — a free service that sends email alerts when documents with personal or business names are recorded. Residents can sign up online to help protect against title fraud and unauthorized filings.  KYMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal grants totaling nearly $190 million were cut from Arizona’s public health system—these cuts affected COVID-19 response programs, vaccine distribution, and disease tracking statewide.  KYMA
