COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Wellton have said their drinking water is unsafe and they are frustrated that efforts to fix the problem have taken too long—town officials have provided free water at three kiosks since February to help meet the need. Some residents have also started using home filtration systems to protect their health.  AZ Family
  • In San Luis, 11 families built their own houses with help from non-profit Comite de Bienestar and a construction company. The organization will hand over 12 more homes in two months—one homeowner said building their own house brings extra value to life.  KYMA

CRIME NEWS

  • Tucson Sector agents arrested an 18-year-old driver who fled when her vehicle was spiked and chased a 19-year-old convicted felon passenger along with three migrants during a smuggling attempt (agents found a firearm and are investigating who had it).  KYMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona Western College will host its 12th Annual Student Etiquette Luncheon on Thursday, April 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Schoening Conference Center at the AWC Yuma Campus where students from local universities and the community will learn business etiquette, earn a Professional Etiquette certificate, and have a chance at a *$500* scholarship.  Arizona Western College

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Yuma Police Department is running the hashtag put it down campaign to reduce distracted driving by strictly enforcing cellphone citations; officers recorded 207 such citations in 2024 and about 2,000 accidents where phone use was a factor. National road safety experts report that distracted driving causes over 325,000 serious injuries and more than 330 deaths on Arizona roads every year — a preventable tragedy urging drivers to use hands-free devices instead — to improve safety.  KYMA
