EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at César Chávez Elementary will participate in a peaceful march on March 31 to honor César Chávez’s legacy. The annual event highlights his role in advancing rights for migrant farmworkers (and encourages students to learn self-advocacy).  AZ Family
  • Yuma School District One will raise all employees’ salaries by 3% for the upcoming school year—eligible classroom staff will also get an extra $3 thousand and hourly support staff earning above minimum wage will receive an additional 50 cents.  KYMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yuma County's ARIZONA@WORK event provided job training, resume help, and placement guidance for workers facing layoffs; Operations Director Patrick Goetz said another round of layoffs will likely occur within two weeks (pending more details).  KYMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Onvida Health in Yuma has introduced the Ion robotic system — a new tool that helps doctors reach hard-to-access lung areas to find small nodules and detect cancer early. The hospital said the system uses less invasive methods to offer faster care for patients.  KYMA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona Western College freshman forward Fernanda Quiroz was called up to play for Mexico's U-20 National Team and will train in Mexico City on March 31 — she played for Club Tijuana and Mexico's U-15 and U-17 teams and recorded four goals with five assists this season.  Arizona Western College
