COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ DAV Yuma closed its bar after losing tax exempt status for failing to file three Form 990 returns and meeting only 0.92% of the required 10% for support. State officials and veterans say the loss has affected community funds and call for alternative events to sustain the chapter. KYMA
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Blue Angels have begun winter training at Naval Air Facility El Centro in the Imperial Valley for the 2026 air show season. They will conduct daily flights over the coming weeks before performing at the air show on March 14 — a treat for local fans. KYMA
- ➤ Wild West Days is set for Jan. 31 at Yuma Territorial Prison Museum. The family event offers gun fight reenactments, live music, whiskey tasting, carnival games, retail vendors, historic presentations, and a Victorian runway show (general admission is $20). KYMA
- ➤ Country dance fans can look forward to the Country Lovin’ Hoedown at Pivot Point Conference Center — a local favorite — on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 1 to 6 p.m. Tickets cost $40 and are available online or at 2nd Chance Thrift Store at 550 W. 8th St. KYMA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Representatives from the University of Arizona toured Yuma's U of A Cooperative Extension office on Tuesday to showcase local research and discuss funding opportunities with state officials including Sen. Tim Dunn — part of the university's statewide tour of rural extensions. KYMA
- ➤ Local students participated in the Mentor-Me MD winter workshop at Onvida Health, where they observed lab tests and explored healthcare careers. The three-week program has run for five years and inspired over 30 attendees + future professionals. KYMA
- ➤ The Sunrise Optimist Club is hosting a local essay contest for students under 19, calling for an essay on community service (up to 800 words) that offers monetary prizes and a chance to compete for a $2,500 scholarship; essays are accepted until Jan. 15. KYMA
